We have written before about how a clean working environment can boost productivity, so we are going to explain how in a little more detail and give you some tips on how you can keep your workspace tidy, in between the visits from your commercial cleaning company!

Declutter, tidy & clean!

A study by Harvard University found that students who worked in a clutter-free workspace were able to work steadily for 7.5 minutes longer than the students attempting the same task in a cluttered workspace.

By decluttering your desk or workspace, you are less likely to be distracted by objects around you, which means you can focus more on what you need to do. And perhaps more importantly, you will also be less stressed! Clutter can result in trying to focus on too many things at once, which makes you feel more stressed, so remind yourself and your colleagues that a tidy environment is better for staff morale.

Look at Your Workspace

If you are reading this at work (on a break, of course!) have a look around you. Are you surrounded by a minimalist clear space, or a pile of paperwork? If it is the latter, can you find just 5 minutes today to clear your workspace and your mind?

We all know that as work gets busy, it’s easy to forget to tidy…we’re all guilty of that. But let’s remember that a messy desk not only reduces our focus and productivity, but it also is a breeding ground for germs and creates a negative impression for anyone approaching the space, whether that’s a colleague or customer.

So here’s a few handy tips on how you can clean your workspace in 5 minutes:

1) De-Clutter

Depending on your type of workspace, your clutter will come in different forms, but for example in an office, your desk is likely to be drowning in a sea of paperwork. So sort through what needs filing, what needs shredding and what can go in the bin. Set up a tray system to keep paperwork neat, tidy and organised.

2) Rubbish

Your workspace doesn’t just mean what you can see, but any drawers, shelves etc that are around you. I think we’ve all been guilty of putting an empty biscuit wrapper in the drawer because we didn’t have time to take it to the bin at that moment! So any rubbish that you have on or around your workspace…throw it away!

3) Quick Clean

This one will depend on whether you have a cleaner in-house, or a commercial cleaning company that come in and clean for you, or neither! If your space is cleaned daily…great! If it’s weekly, fortnightly, or never, then it might be a good idea to give your space a quick clean every day or couple of days. Keep some antibacterial wipes in your desk drawer and have a quick wipe down each evening before you leave so you come back the next morning to a clean, fresh and hygienic workspace!

4) Vacuum

Similar to the last point, this will depend on the regularity of your cleaning schedule. But think about it…if you’ve had a couple of biscuits with your morning tea or coffee and you’ve spilled crumbs on the carpet…do you just leave it there until the next planned clean, or could you get the vacuum and quickly clean it up?

We hope that this has been useful and if you have any other tips, please feel free to share them with us. And don’t think we’re trying to make our job easier by getting you to clean before we come! We just want all of our clients to have a clean, healthy workplace!
