We have reached Autumn after one of the hottest summers on record and the plummeting temperatures are suddenly very noticeable. At home and at work, the heating will be coming on, and this brings about a whole host of health issues that make cleaning even more important.

Spring is traditionally when we do a ‘deep clean’, but autumn cleaning is actually more important. Central heating and closed windows reduce ventilation and create conditions that dust mites, bacteria and mould love, putting your health at greater risk. We all know this is typically the season that colds, coughs and viruses become more widespread, so it is important to do what we can to reduce health risks, both at home and in the workplace.

Open windows

Higher indoor temperatures and a lack of fresh air raises humidity and encourages bacteria and dust mites to grow. This is particularly bad for respiratory infections and those with asthma. Open windows slightly to let some fresh air in and the moisture out every now and then.

Vacuum

As we said above, higher humidity encourages bacteria and dust mites to flourish and they love a warm, damp carpet! Vacuum carpets as often as possible to reduce the bacteria and don’t forget to use the attachments to clean right up to the edges and underneath furniture. And remember to empty your vacuum and clean filters regularly. It is also advisable to have your carpets professionally cleaned at least once a year.

Clean Surfaces

A lot of us are probably quite adamant about using antibacterial sprays to clean surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom all year round, but at this time of year, when bugs are rife, it is important to extend this cleaning to many surfaces around the home and workplace. Think about surfaces that come into contact with hands regularly, such as door handles, keyboards, phones, taps, handrails etc and ensure they are sprayed and cleaned on a regular basis.

Empty Bins

Emptying bins is something that should be done regularly anyway, to rid germs and smells from food waste etc. But at this time of year, it is likely that your bins will be getting filled with used tissues, and these should be emptied daily to avoid the multiplication and spread of germs.

Deep Clean

Deep cleans can be done at any time of year, but the start of a new season is often when people think about it. Autumn is a great time to deep clean your workplace in particular, to eliminate germs and bacteria and to start the season with a clean and healthy environment for your staff.

If we can help out with any of the above in your workplace this Autumn, just contact us and we’ll be happy to help!

Until next time,
