As the kitchen is the place where you prepare food, you want to ensure that it is super clean and germ free. Focusing on the types of appliances often found in the kitchens in working environments, here are a few kitchen cleaning tips.

1. Fridges

In a working environment especially, food can be left in the fridge, and be forgotten about, causing nasty smells and mould, which can be transferred to fresh food nearby. So follow these basic rules:

  • Empty out any out-of-date/unwanted food once a week (Friday afternoon is a good time)
  • Wipe/clean any jars, bottles etc that may have sauce or liquid around the sides or edges
  • Wipe up any drips or spills as soon as they happen
  • For tough stains, spray a solution of vinegar and water and wipe clean

2. Microwaves

A lot of work kitchens also have a microwave, and over time, without cleaning, you may find that it starts to smell like a very strange combination of curry, chilli, soup and baked beans! You can clean it very simply and very quickly by following this:

  • Put half a cup of water in a bowl
  • Cut a lemon in half, squeeze the juice into the water and also add the lemon halves
  • Microwave the bowl for 3 minutes
  • Leave with the door shut for 5 minutes
  • Take out and wipe the microwave clean

3. Toasters

Toasters can often be neglected. They sit in the corner of the kitchen and make your toast each day…but their dirt is lurking below the surface! Here’s how to clear it of its hidden crumbs and restore its cleanliness:

  • Make sure the toaster is unplugged and cool
  • Remove the crumb tray (if you have one) and shake off the crumbs into the bin. Wash off any residual crumbs in soapy water and dry thoroughly
  • If your toaster doesn’t have a crumb tray, tip the toaster upside down over the bin.
  • Wipe the outside of the toaster with a damp cloth
  • Put the crumb tray back into place and you’re ready to make more toast!

4. Work surfaces

Work surfaces are the most simple, yet most important to keep clean. Wipe these (preferably with an antibacterial cleaning liquid) every time food is prepared to ensure that crumbs and food residue don’t turn into a germ party.

Until next time,
